They look really cramped, I think the space is only about 15 feet wide where they play. Real energetic though. I used to have a list of the songs that REM has stated they despise performing. I think #1 was Harbourcoat, and I forget the rest. No, I wouldn't characterize it that way at all. It is one of those things where the the sum of parts exceeds the whole. That is, she has a whole bunch of great musicians backing her on various cuts (Michael Stipe, Richard Thompson, Anton Fier, Brian Eno, Tony Levin, etc.). But it doesn't jell together real well - there's no stylistic consistency, as she jumps from ballads to hard rock to country-tinged tunes. Still, her duet with Stipe "Future 40's (String of Pearls)", "Sphinx", her cover of the dBs "Think Too Hard" are all great. It's just that her voice, wonderful as it is, makes the rest of it only OK. Still, I'd recommend the album. And I've heard that she's wonderful live.... Someone mentioned they wanted to see a list of REM songs that the band has tired of. I get this from memory of a _Musician_ magazine that came out about the same time _Document_ did. A few people agreed about harborcoat, but the complaint was that it sounded beter on studio and came out weak live. Michael said he hated 'Catapult', but that he might play it as a joke. Peter Buck said he never was a fan of 'Wendell Gee', that he only played banjo on it and never got into it. I think Michael said that he was tired of 'Rockville'. There were a few more but I can't remember them. My guess is that they are REALLY REALLY sick of Radio Free Europe. He then announced that, historically, a stock market crash (The concert was the night after the crash in Oct. '87) precipitated a depression, which in 10 years was resolved by a war... The band then careened into R.E.M.'s new song, "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" and the place went bats. I recall 10000 Maniacs, DNC and Indigo Girls getting lots of list time. While I have thought all along that such digressions were interesting and usually Good Things, I am biased because I like most of them. Usually their problem was that they lost the original thread in which they were mentioned, i.e. their connection to REM. It's obvious that DNC has a whole fan club in the making, so why doesn't someone start up a list? Anyway, my real reason for posting this is related to the idea someone had that everyone prefix their comments with REM: or DNC: or IG: or whatever. This is a good idea ANYWAY; I wouldn't mind if every post from this list had "REM:" or the like in the subject line, simply because when you log on and find 31 mail messages, it's nice to be able to skim through the subject lines and look for "real" (non-list) mail. Any thoughts? Also, while we seem to be on the subject of other bands, bands that have some direct relation to REM or are just REM-like, does anyone out there listen to the Connells? They seem to me to be one of the most obvious answers to the "If you like REM then you would definitely like..." question. As far as REM and the Connells having similar sounds...definitely. Especially in their older stuff (Connells old and REM old). Most people I've met who like REM and have heard of the Connells like them. Except for the Green type people. (And on a side note, who cares what they think anyway?). Outside of music, they're actually very similar too... both college town bands.. playing alot of small venues like small bars and frat parties. If you get a chance, check them out live. When I saw their show, I loved it... not to mention that not many people are in to them, and you don't have to fight to get in the door. woj: Power pop? What kind of sterotype is that supposed to be? On another note, about the favorite bands thing. The Cure mailing list has done what Daren is doing in the past. It's obvious since all of us like REM, that we're going to have similar musical tastes. It helps alot to find new bands that you like when you have some reccomendations... I saw the JudyBats open up for Yo La Tengo a little while ago, I liked their sound and picked up the cd when it came out. The album is called Native Son and is on Sire/Warner Bros. The single that's getting airplay is called "She Lives (In a Time of Her Own)." At points, I think maybe I would compare them to R.E.M., but the first song particularly reminds me of the Pixies. It may be impossible to *enforce*, per se, but it seems to me that since the idea was first mentioned, people have been doing it anyways, and it has been helpful to me, at least, in digesting my mail. The folks on this list seem pretty reasonable, and it is an idea that 1)makes sense and 2)doesn't cause any real hassle. Nowadays, they have their own style; they're more pop-ish where REM are more folkish or art-ish. I like "One Simple Word" - their lastest album - except for the production values. This is not the band's fault; they're great songwriters and musicians. But IMHO the guitars are too thin (should've overdubbed more guitar tracks) and the vocals are usually too faint. Still, it's a catchy album, and Mike Connell writes some beautiful stuff. Well, since a couple of people have asked about the review, I'll post the relevant part of it. It probably isn't going to be the most informative of the forthcoming reviews, and with a group of REM's stature, I'm sure it'll be reviewed just about everywhere from NME to Playboy to People. And we'll all end up saying stuff like "What do the critics know, anyway?". >From the 2/8/81 edition of the _East Bay Express_, by Gina Arnold... {stuff about how she likes REM deleted. Etc. } "...That's how 'Out of Time" sounds, a return to the familiar, more REM-ish than the biggest REM clone could ever sound, all drony chords and jangly guitar chords and Stipish lyrics. My favorite song is called "Losing My Religion", though the single, "Radio Song", which utilizes the services of KRS-1, and "Shiny Happy People", a poppy duet with Kate Pierson of the B-52s are really cool too." Well, that's the first that I've seen. Kind of like the first robin in spring? We'll see a lot more. Come to think of it though, this is the first REM album released since the inception of the mailing list. Which means most of us will probably end up buying the album the first week it comes out. If not sooner. Which leads to a perhaps unpopular suggestion. All you True Fans (tm) will probably buy the album on the release date. Could the discussion of the album be held off just a couple of days to let the rest of us buy it and listen? Dumb request, I know, but otherwise the 5 people who buy it on the morning of Day 1 and run home and listen to it first thing and then post to murmur immediately afterwards will kind of beat the thing into the ground before the rest of us have even had a chance for a listen. So maybe we could listen to it (sure, 2-3 times a day) for the first few days before we post our discussion of it? And as long as I'm making suggestions (yeah, I know, who died and made me net.murmur.god?) - I'm not sure that posting reviews of the new album will be all that useful. There will be so many, most saying the same things, that it won't seem very enlightening unless the review actually has some new insight or information unavailable anywhere else.
